Tips for composing

Click the staff to add a note (starts a new beat). Shift+click adds another note to the current beat as a chord. The full guide explains everything.

  • Keyboard entry: once the staff has focus (click it once), the Up/Down arrow keys add a note a step at a time from the last note placed, instead of having to click each one. Shift+Up/Down adds to the current chord, the 1/2/4/8 keys switch duration the same as their toolbar buttons (6 for a sixteenth), and "." and 3 toggle Dotted and Triplet.
  • Tie: connects the next note placed to the previous note, as long as it's the same pitch — the standard way to sustain a note across a bar line.
  • Rest: adds a silent beat of the selected duration.
  • New Measure: forces a bar line right after the last note placed, even if the measure isn't full — for a pickup/anacrusis measure at the start of a piece.
  • Guide Lines: shows extra dashed ledger-line guides above and below the staff, covering the full playable range for the current tuning/capo, to make it easier to click accurately for notes beyond the 5 regular lines.
  • Chords: up to 6 notes each. Chord-shape recognition only applies in standard tuning (a fret pattern only means "E major" etc. under standard tuning's open-string pitches).
  • Editing: click a note on the staff (or in the list below) to select it, then click the staff to move it, or use Insert Before to add notes in front of it, Set Length to give it the length chosen above, String to choose which string plays it, or Delete Selected. ←/→ select the next note, Esc cancels.
  • Editable note list: the list below is also directly editable as text — click into it and type, e.g. "C4(q)" (lengths w, h, q, 8, 16; "q." dotted, "8t" triplet), a chord as "[C4+E4+G4](q)", a rest as "Rest(q)", a tie as "⌣D5(q)", a note pinned to the 2nd string as "C5@2", a forced bar line (same as "New Measure") as "|" after a note, and a manual chord label for that whole bar as "{Cm7}" right before its first note (or "{}" to force no label, overriding automatic detection either way) — the staff updates as you type.
